How to Make Homemade Oat Milk

Learning how to make my own oat milk is something I thought of doing for awhile. It was one of those things I thought would be interesting to try, but probably required more effort than it was really worth. I am now here to tell you that I was seriously wrong. Seriously. I love being able to customize the consistency and flavor of my milk, and it is great to know exactly what I am consuming. You can be enjoying the (preservative and additive free) fruits of your labor in just 3 simple steps!

Suggested: No Knead Bread, Soft and Chewy Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies

Tools Required

  • High powered blender
  • Mesh strainer or towel

Step 1)

Add rolled oats, water and dates (if using) to your blender. Blend for 30-45 seconds.

Step 2)

Strain and flavor to your liking.

Tips

This recipe does not require any soaking of the oats. If you do soak your oats, expect them to become slimy and more difficult to strain. The same goes for blending. I recommend to stay within the 30-45 second range when blending, maybe a minute at most. The more you blend the oats the slimier they will become. What to do with the Oat Pulp

Oat pulp is rich in nutrients such as fibre, vitamins, and minerals that offer a great nutrient boost to many recipes. Consider adding it to a smoothie, a cookie recipe, overnight oats, or pancakes to name a few. However, if you can’t think of something that appeals to you, you can always use the pulp to make a face mask, or add it to a bath. Oat milk has great skincare properties. Just don’t let it go to waste in a landfill!

Additions

  • Dates can be added as a natural sweetening agent. I recommend adding one date per cup of oats. If you still want it to be sweeter, than you can add an additional sweetening agent, such as icing sugar.
  • Icing sugar is another sweetening agent I like because it does not leave any granules. Start with a 1/4 tsp, and add as needed until desired sweetness is reached.
  • Salt is necessary in my opinion, but can easily be overdone. Start with a 1/4 tsp and taste test as you go.
  • Vanilla is a lovely addition, but keep in mind that it does not taste great to cook with.
  • Berries can be a great addition to this milk! Blend them in with the oats and water.
  • Cocoa powder add a 1/4-1/2 cup cocoa to make “chocolate milk”.

You can really let your imagination be your guide! Try some things out and let everyone know in the comments how it went πŸ™‚

Notes

It is worth noting that this homemade oat milk will separate in the fridge. As it is natural and homemade, there is no emulsifying agent. This is not a problem and does not hurt anything or mean it has gone bad. Some people even prefer to pour it off the top if they don’t want it creamy. However, if you do like it creamy, like I do, just remember to give it a good stir before use.
